Hardware in a communications circuit uses a variety of methods to efficiently transfer data. These include multiplexing and desmultiplexing. These are processes that combine or separate signals and then transmit them as one composite signal. This maximizes bandwidth and reduces costs. Error-detection code and signal amplifiers also reduce data corruption due to noise or momentary electrical disturbances which can alter bits of information as they travel over the communication channel.
Data communications also include a set of rules (protocol) that are followed by the sender and receiver computers. These rules ensure that the message will be recognized and understood correctly.
The sender is the device or computer which generates and sends the message, which may be in the form of numbers, text images, sound, or video. The receiver is the device or computer that receives the message, which may be the same as the sender or different. The transmission medium is the physical way from the sender to the receiver. It could be a wired medium, such as twisted pair wire, fiber optic cable or wireless, such as lasers, microwaves, or radio waves.
