Many boards continue to send sensitive internal governance communications through insecure communication channels. Diligent Corporation released a report which found that 56 percent board members use their personal emails to communicate with the board. Even the top executives and governance professionals are also involved in this. This is a major risk that must be addressed.
It’s important to get board members on board with the need for secure communication. This means educating them on why their current methods leave vulnerable to data breaches and making them aware of the cost of those breaches in terms of loss of operational time, the cost of dealing with cyberattacks, and concerns over compliance violations.
Cyber criminals are attracted to boards due to the fact that they have access to sensitive information that is important to them. The hackers often target prominent individuals like board directors and C-level executives because they have access to sensitive information that has importance to them. They are therefore a prime target for ransomware, where criminals threaten to release sensitive data unless they get paid.
In order to prevent this from happening, it’s imperative that the board considers adopting the governance platform that replaces text and emails messaging with a more secure system of record that utilizes encrypted data delivery and a custom-built mobile app. This will eliminate the need to share privileged or insider information through unsecure documents systems or email accounts which are controlled by the IT departments of the company and offers a separate platform that will enable boards to lead in times of crisis.
